Verify your project's coordinate-system requirements (datum, zone, epoch) independently before using converted values in deliverables.

Datum note: the ellipsoid selection changes the projection mathematics only — no datum transformation (Molodensky / 7-parameter) is applied. Feed in coordinates already referenced to the datum you select.

Conversion Settings
Transverse Mercator computation per Karney (2011), Krüger series to 6th order — the same engine that has served on bearingtechnology.biz, regression-tested with every release. Results include grid convergence and point scale factor.
About this tool

What the Coordinate Converter does, and how

What does the BTPL Coordinate Converter do?

The BTPL Coordinate Converter converts coordinates between UTM (easting, northing, zone and hemisphere) and latitude/longitude, for a single point or for a whole file. It accepts decimal degrees, degrees-minutes and degrees-minutes-seconds, shows the converted points on a map, and works in English or Hindi. It is free to use and needs no registration.

Can it convert UTM to latitude and longitude, and latitude/longitude to UTM?

The BTPL Coordinate Converter converts in both directions, UTM to latitude/longitude and latitude/longitude to UTM. Enter a UTM easting, northing and zone to get latitude and longitude, or enter latitude and longitude to get the UTM coordinates, together with the grid convergence and point scale factor at that position.

Can I convert many coordinates at once?

The BTPL Coordinate Converter converts a whole file of coordinates in one pass. Upload a CSV, Excel or TXT file, map its columns if they are not detected automatically, and the whole table is converted in one pass. The results can be downloaded as CSV, Excel or TXT.

Can it create KML or KMZ files and PDF reports?

The BTPL Coordinate Converter exports converted points as KML or KMZ for Google Earth, can also write them to KML as a connected line or a closed polygon, and produces a PDF report of the converted coordinates.

Which ellipsoids does the converter support?

The converter supports 24 reference ellipsoids, including WGS 84, GRS 1980, International 1924, Clarke 1866 and Bessel 1841, and six variants of Everest 1830 used for legacy survey data in India and South and South-East Asia: the 1937 Adjustment, the 1962, 1967 and 1975 Definitions, Everest 1830 Modified and Everest 1830 (RSO 1969).

How accurate is the conversion?

The transverse Mercator projection is computed with the Krüger series carried to sixth order, following the method published by C. F. F. Karney in the Journal of Geodesy in 2011, whose stated accuracy within a UTM zone is a few nanometres. In practice the accuracy of a converted coordinate is limited by the accuracy of the input coordinates and the datum chosen, not by the arithmetic.

Does the converter transform between datums?

The BTPL Coordinate Converter does not transform between datums: selecting an ellipsoid changes the projection mathematics only; no datum transformation (Molodensky or 7-parameter) is applied. Enter coordinates that are already referenced to the datum you select, and verify your project's datum, zone and epoch independently before using converted values in deliverables.

Is my coordinate data uploaded anywhere?

Nothing is uploaded: the BTPL Coordinate Converter computes its results in your own browser, and your coordinates and files are never sent to BTPL or to any other server. The optional Show on map view is the one part that needs an internet connection: it downloads the map library and the map imagery for the area on screen from third-party map servers (Esri or OpenStreetMap), which can therefore see which area is displayed. Everything else keeps working without a connection once the page has loaded.
